Window and Door Screens in Kailua
Rescreening, new screens, screen doors and lanai panels for Kailua homes, from the bayfront lots to Maunawili, with mesh picked for windward salt and rain.
Four parts of town, four different jobs
The city's neighborhood board for the town splits it into four subdistricts. They sit at different distances from the water and the marsh, and the screens show it.
Lanikai, the beach park strip, Kalaheo
The bayfront strip, closest to the surf. The salt-first choices: fiberglass, bronze or 316 stainless, and frames rinsed often.
Enchanted Lake and Keolu
Homes around Kaelepulu Pond, the estuary partly filled from 1959 to build the subdivision. Standing water nearby makes intact screens worth keeping.
Maunawili
The inland valley under the Koolau. Less salt than the bay, a lot more rain, and wet is its own kind of corrosive.
Coconut Grove, Aikahi, town
Between Kawainui Marsh and the ocean. A mix of older houses, sliders and lanais.
Why do Kailua screens need a different spec?
Because Kailua sits on the windward coast, which the University of Hawaii's island-wide chloride survey ranked with the leeward coast as the saltiest on Oahu. Next door on Mokapu, metal test samples at Marine Corps Base Hawaii corroded more than at any other site in a UH study, and aluminum joined to another metal fared worst. Add rain off the Koolau, a marsh and a pond inside town, and a housing stock where 60 percent of homes predate 1970. On this coast that means rescreening with non-metal or marine-grade mesh, rebuilding corroded frames on extruded stock, fixing sliders and hinged doors, and rescreening lanais.
Mesh for the bay
Near Lanikai and the beach park, fiberglass or vinyl-coated cloth, or bronze and 316 stainless if you want metal.
Frames that drain
Wet frames corrode. Corners and contact points get checked, not just the mesh.
Old openings measured
Pre-1970 houses rarely match stock sizes, so new screens are cut to the opening.
Condo rules respected
Condos and townhomes here follow their board's rules for lanai and door changes.
Kailua's housing
Census estimates count about 14,700 homes in the local census area. Roughly three in four are detached houses, about 60 percent were built before 1970, and only about a quarter are rented. Mostly owner-occupied, mostly older, mostly single-family.
That stock means original jalousies, aging sliders and lanais that have been rescreened more than once. Repair-first makes sense here when the frames are still sound.

Near Kawainui Marsh
About 800 acres, the largest wetland left in Hawaii. The state health department advises repaired screens and weekly checks for standing water around homes.
Coconut Grove
The marsh levee was overtopped in the New Year's Eve flood of 1987-88. Frames that sat wet that long are worth a close look at the corners.
Maunawili
A ranch gauge here holds the US record of 331 straight days of rain, set in 1939-40. Moisture, not just salt, works on these frames.
Screens across the island of Oahu
Windward, leeward, central and town. Salt exposure changes a lot between these places, so mesh and frame choices change with them. Area notes: Kailua window screens and North Shore window screens.
